The subject's view of the object, made possible by the perspective which he can occupy, is subjective only in terms of his own limitations: he cannot see all round it or within it, say, and so widen his perspective; but that is not the fault of the object, which has as many perspectives as it has sides and insides. The material object is perceived in aspects or slices (perspectives). If the observer does not think about one side of the penny but about the whole penny, it is because his ordinary experience over a period has enabled him to put together a picture of the whole penny as though it could be viewed in the round in all of its aspects.

L l (2) Knowledge comes from action as well as from perception. Hume insisted that it was the "subverter of scepticism," and indeed there is strong evidence that our perceptions are not themselves creative but only report to us what exists in our neighborhood. Every move I make is evidence against the notion that the world is my idea of it. (3) If indeed I did create the world through my perceptions or thoughts, how does it happen that errors exist in my thinking? Experience corrects errors, but how did I make them in the first place, and how does it come about they are susceptible to such correction?

The redbird is on a lower branch, on a tree smaller than its neighbor, etc. Perception, then, has passive and active phases. Discrimination is passive, identification is active. Perception is deliberate in that the objects the subject perceives are independent of his perceptions of them. It is both genuine and at the same time partial. It discloses the impressions made by the object (which are always somewhat less than the whole object) on the perspective of the subject functioning as observer (always somewhat less than the whole observer).
