So, some argue, what is the point of this debate? We are arguing about the nature of a nonexistent book! In response, the claim that the original documents alone are inerrant, not the copies, is no more problematic than the claim, made by all evangelicals, that the original documents alone are inspired, not the copies. If the former is meaningless and irrelevant, so is the latter. In truth, however, neither view is problematic. Through textual criticism we are able to discern what was part of the original Word of God with a remarkably high degree of accuracy.
